Now that spring is here you can see many flowering shrubs and trees along the riverbanks. One of my favorites is “Old Man’s Beard” (Chionanthus virginicus). Also known as “White Fringetree” and “Grancy Gray Beard”.
Old Man’s Beard is a small tree that is most easily spotted when in bloom. The blooms are pure white and lace-like, very beautiful.
The dried, crushed bark and roots were used by Native Americans to treat skin inflammation and sores.
The next time you are on the river, look for Old Man’s Beard!
